A single pink vertical line on a MacBook looks like the panel is dying. In the shop it is one of the most common display searches we see from Chennai, and it is often cheaper to fix than a full LCD if you check the cable first.
The line is usually a broken data or backlight lane in the display path: the flex cable through the hinge, the LCD column drivers, or (rarely) the board-side eDP signal. Graphics on the logic board are the least likely cause when HDMI or USB-C output still looks normal.
If the pink column changes when you move the lid, start with Flexgate cable repair. If the glass is cracked or the line never moves, budget for a panel. Do not buy a full lid until those two checks are done.
What a pink vertical line usually looks like
People describe the same fault in different words: a magenta hairline, a purple bar, a pink stripe that gets thicker, or a column that appears only at certain hinge angles. All of those can be the same cable wearing through inside the clutch.
- One thin column that stays in the same place: often a panel column, or a cable that has already failed in that lane.
- One or more bars that flicker when you open the lid: classic Flexgate / display flex.
- Pink wash plus a dark screen where a torch still shows the desktop: backlight path, often still cable-repairable.
- Stage-light glow along the bottom bezel with flicker: another Flexgate pattern, even before a full pink line shows.

Why the line is pink (and what actually failed)
The LCD needs a clean data stream and a working backlight. When a few traces in the flex crack, you lose colour channels in a vertical strip. Pink and magenta show up first because those lanes sit in the cable that folds every time you open the MacBook.

A1706, A1707, and A1708 MacBook Pros (2016–2017, including Touch Bar) are the classic Flexgate machines. 2018–2019 13-inch and 15-inch Pros show the same hinge-cable wear. MacBook Air M1/M2 and later Pros can still throw a single pink column after impact or liquid at the bottom of the lid. Four checks before you buy a screen
- External monitor. HDMI, USB-C, or a dock. If that image is clean, the GPU path on the board is usually fine. The fault is the built-in display path.
- Lid angle. Open and close a few millimetres. If the pink column appears, thickens, or vanishes with hinge movement, that is the flex under stress. Stop cycling the lid after you have confirmed it.
- Torch test. In a dark room, shine a flashlight at a shallow angle on a “black” screen. A faint desktop, menu bar, or login window means the LCD is still producing an image. That is backlight or cable, not a dead panel.
- Photo and video. One still of the line, one slow lid-angle clip, and a shot of the lid corners. WhatsApp those for a first-pass opinion.
A restart, SMC reset, or display calibration setting will not weld a cracked flex. If the line is still there after reboot, treat it as hardware.

What not to do
- Do not keep folding the lid to show friends the line. That finishes the remaining traces.
- Do not press the bottom bezel or poke the hinge with tools. The cable sits there.
- Do not order a random LCD from a listing that does not match the exact model year.
- Do not assume AppleCare still covers 2016–2019 Flexgate quality programs. Most of those have ended; independent cable repair is the usual path now.

On many 2016–2019 MacBook Pros, a fatigued display flex cable (Flexgate) breaks data or backlight lanes, which shows as one or more pink, purple, or magenta columns.
