MacBook Flexgate Repair: Why You See Vertical Pink Bars, a Dark Screen, or No Backlight
If your MacBook shows vertical pink bars, the screen looks black unless you shine a torch, or the display flickers when you open the lid, it is often Flexgate — a failing display flex cable. Here is why it happens and how we fix it.
Customers almost never search for “Flexgate.” They search for what they see: vertical pink bars on the screen, MacBook no backlight, a display that looks dead until you shine a phone torch on it, flickering when the lid moves, or a stage-light glow along the bottom edge.
Those are usually the same family of faults: the thin ribbon that carries video and backlight power through the hinge has started to fail. In the repair trade that failure is called Flexgate. This guide explains why it happens, how to tell it apart from a cracked LCD or a logic-board issue, and what actually fixes it — without guessing at a full display swap.

Use this as a translation layer between everyday language and the repair. You do not need the Apple name for the part — you need the pattern.

If moving the lid changes the picture — pink bars jump, backlight returns, or flicker starts — treat it as a cable problem until a technician proves otherwise. That hinge-angle test is one of the strongest Flexgate clues we have.
What Flexgate actually is
Inside every modern MacBook display is a flexible printed circuit (FPC) — a thin, multi-layer ribbon. It has to do three jobs at once: carry high-speed image data to the LCD, carry power to the backlight LEDs, and fold every time you open the laptop.
On several 2016–2019 MacBook Pro generations, that ribbon was routed with very little slack. Thousands of open-close cycles stretch the copper traces past their fatigue limit. The cable does not usually snap in one go. It fails the way a paperclip fails: first a few strands, then more.
That is why Flexgate feels “progressive”:
- Week 1: a faint stage-light glow or a flicker at one lid angle.
- Week 2–3: backlight drops when the lid is fully open; the screen looks fine half-closed.
- Later: no backlight at all, or vertical pink / purple bars as data lines open-circuit. Some units go dark overnight after one last hinge movement.
The name is not an official Apple error code. It is the name the independent repair community gave the pattern so customers and technicians could talk about the same fault. If an Apple Store quote says “display assembly,” they are often describing the same cable-inside-the-panel problem — they just sell the whole assembly rather than a cable-level repair.
Why it happens: design, daily use, and a few accelerators
The hinge is a bending machine
Every time you open a MacBook, the flex cable is asked to bend at a tight radius near the bottom of the panel. If the cable is short, that bend is sharper than the copper can tolerate for years. Office users who open the lid 10–20 times a day reach failure faster than someone who leaves the Mac closed as a desktop with an external monitor — but even light use will get there on a susceptible model.
Heat and the bottom bezel
The failure zone sits in the lower display bezel, close to vents and the battery. Heat makes adhesives and the polyimide film less forgiving. A MacBook that lives on a lap, bed, or pillow (blocked vents) often shows Flexgate earlier than one on a stand.
What makes it worse
- Opening the lid from a corner twists the housing and peels traces unevenly.
- One-handed open while holding the base is normal — it is also exactly the motion that loads the cable.
- Liquid at the chin of the display (coffee running down the screen, a splash on the keyboard that wicked up) corrodes the same ribbon.
- A previous “cheap screen” swap with a poorly routed cable can recreate Flexgate on a Mac that never had it.
- Keeping the lid at the “bad angle” because the picture only works there — that continues to saw the remaining copper.
Important: Flexgate is not a software bug, a True Tone setting, or a macOS update. Resetting NVRAM or reinstalling macOS will not restore a torn cable. Those steps are only useful to rule out a rare firmware/display-handshake issue after hardware is proven good.
Which MacBooks get this — and which usually do not
Classic Flexgate is concentrated on MacBook Pro 13-inch and 15-inch, 2016 through 2019 (Touch Bar, two or four Thunderbolt ports). Those chassis share the short-cable display architecture. 2018–2019 revisions improved some lengths, but we still see hinge-angle backlight loss and pink lines on those years.
Later MacBook Air M1/M2/M3 and 14/16-inch Pro machines use different display stacks. They can still show no backlight, pink lines, or flicker — from impact, a pinched cable after a previous repair, liquid, or a failed T-CON / backlight driver — but it is not always the 2016-style Flexgate. We still start with the same questions: flashlight test, lid-angle test, external monitor.

Vertical pink bars: Flexgate vs broken LCD vs graphics
Pink, purple, and magenta vertical lines are one of the most searched MacBook screen problems — and they are easy to mis-diagnose on a forum screenshot. Three hardware paths look similar until you test them.
1. Flex cable (Flexgate-style)
- Lines appear or change when you move the lid.
- Backlight may also be uneven or missing.
- External monitor is fine.
- No impact history required — daily opening is enough on 2016–2019 Pro.
This is the case where a targeted Flexgate repair can save you a full panel.
2. LCD panel (physical damage)
- Lines stay put no matter the hinge angle.
- You may see blotches, white spots, or a “ink in water” bloom.
- History of a close in a bag with a charger on the keys, a drop, or pressure on the lid.

3. Logic board / GPU (less common on these machines)
- Artefacts on the built-in screen and on an external monitor.
- Random coloured blocks, kernel panics, or the Mac fails to boot to a desktop at all.
- Liquid history, or a Mac that already had board-level work.
If the external display is clean, we almost never start with a logic-board repair for pink bars. Do not let a shop skip the cable and flashlight tests and jump straight to “motherboard.”
No backlight: the flashlight test and what it proves
MacBook no backlight is the other search that maps straight onto Flexgate. The Mac may: play the boot chime, show a caps-lock LED, connect to Wi-Fi, or already be logged in — you just cannot see anything.
Do this once, gently:
- Dim the room.
- Shine a phone torch almost parallel to the screen, not straight on.
- Look for a faint Apple logo, login window, or your wallpaper. Tilt the lid a few degrees while you look.
If you can see a ghost image, the LCD is receiving a picture. The failure is illumination: backlight LEDs, the boost circuit that powers them, or the traces in the flex that feed that circuit. That is why people describe it as “screen went black but the laptop is still on” or “I need a flashlight to use my MacBook.”
If there is no image even with a torch, and an external monitor also stays black, we look at power, display-init on the board, or a fully dead panel. If the external monitor works and the built-in panel is truly blank with a torch, it can still be a data-line cable or a failed LCD — diagnosis on the bench is the next step, not more lid gymnastics.
The “stage light” warning you should not ignore
Before the screen goes fully dark, many 2016–2019 MacBook Pros show a stage-light effect: brighter columns of light rising from the bottom bezel, like footlights on a stage. It is often worse on a dark wallpaper or at low brightness.
That glow is backlight leaking through traces that have already started to separate. It is the cheapest moment to repair. Waiting until you have full pink lines or zero backlight does not always change the labour — but it does raise the chance that the LCD itself has been stressed or that a DIY “wiggle the hinge” session has torn more layers.
What not to do (it makes the cable worse)
- Do not keep opening the lid to “find the sweet spot.” You are bending a cracked ribbon.
- Do not tape the lid half-closed as a long-term workstation. Fine for a day to finish a file; it is not a repair.
- Do not press hard along the bottom of the screen. You can crease the LCD and turn a cable job into a full display.
- Do not run a hair dryer or “flexgate heat trick” videos as a fix. Heat can soften adhesive and warp the panel. It does not re-grow copper.
- Do not install a random eBay display “to try.” Poor cable length and seating is how Flexgate comes back in a month.
How we diagnose it at the bench
A proper Flexgate diagnosis is not “looks like the screen, replace the screen.” At our Mount Road service centre we separate cable, backlight, and panel so the quote matches the fault.
- History and lid-angle test. When did lines or darkness start? Drop, liquid, or only daily opening?
- External video. Confirms the Mac and graphics path if the built-in panel is unreadable.
- Flashlight / camera test. Proves whether the LCD is still painting pixels.
- Open inspection. We look at the flex near the hinge for cracks, green corrosion, or a previous pull.
- Power rails. Backlight voltage at the connector tells us cable vs driver vs LED string.
- Quote with options. Cable-level repair when the panel is healthy; assembly replacement when it is not. You approve before parts go in.

The solution: what actually repairs Flexgate
Option A — Display flex / backlight cable repair
When the glass is intact, there are no impact blooms, and pink bars track with the hinge, we replace or rebuild the flex so image data and backlight power have a continuous path again. After assembly we check:
- Full-range lid motion without flicker
- Even backlight (no stage-light band)
- No residual pink or missing columns
- True Tone / colour behaviour on models that support it

Option B — Full display assembly
We recommend a complete Retina or Liquid Retina assembly when:
- The LCD already has physical damage or stable lines that ignore hinge angle
- The original panel’s backlight LEDs have failed, not just the cable
- A previous repair left a mismatched or creased screen
- Cable-only parts are not reliable for that exact year/size

Option C — Not a screen job
If the flashlight test is negative and the external monitor is also dead, we stop talking about Flexgate and inspect power, display-init, or board-level video. Mixing those quotes up is how people pay for a display and still have a black screen.
After the repair: making it last
- Open the lid with two hands when you can, from the centre of the front edge.
- Do not yank the Mac open from one corner while it is still latched.
- Keep liquid away from the hinge and lower bezel.
- Use a stand and external display if this Mac is a desk machine 10 hours a day — fewer cycles, longer cable life.
- If stage light ever returns, come in early. Early Flexgate is cheaper than a shattered-looking panel later.
