A MacBook that will not turn on is often a failed power path, not a scrap logic board. Intel notebooks with the Apple T2 chip (MacBook Air 2018-2020, MacBook Pro 13-inch 2018-2020, 15-inch 2018-2019, and 16-inch 2019) and Apple Silicon Air and Pro models (M1 through current M-series) share the same constraint: storage is soldered, and decryption keys live in hardware on that board. Component-level repair is how we restore power without discarding the original computer, and without discarding the files on it.
At iQube Tech Care, Mount Road, Chennai, we diagnose T2 and M-series logic boards at chip level. Diagnosis is free. Repair starts only after you approve a written quote. Completed board repairs carry a 90-day warranty on the work performed. If we cannot complete the repair described in that quote, no fix, no fee: you are not charged for that repair.
A full logic board replacement on a T2 or M-series MacBook is a new computer. Confirm whether the original board can take power and still talk to storage before you approve that path.
Why T2 and Apple Silicon boards cannot be treated like older Intel Macs
On some Intel Macs before 2016, a removable SSD could be moved to a known-good board. From 2016 many MacBook Pro models already used soldered storage. The T2 generation (2018) and every Apple Silicon MacBook went further: encryption keys sit in the Secure Enclave. Moving NAND, or fitting a donor board, does not decrypt the original volume.
Intel with Apple T2. The T2 chip includes a Secure Enclave and takes over several controllers that used to be separate: SSD encryption in hardware, Secure Boot, Touch ID, the camera image-signal path, audio, and SMC-class power policy. Hardware volume encryption is always on. FileVault, if enabled, adds your login password on top. The T2 and the onboard SSD are a pair. A replacement board has different keys. Repairing the original board is the data-preserving option.
Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, and later). CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, unified memory, and the Secure Enclave are in one SoC. NAND is on the same logic board. There is no separate SMC and no Intel-style Command-R Recovery shortcut. Startup Options appear only if firmware power is already present. Replacing the board replaces the computer. Chip-level work on the original board is how files stay on the machine, provided the SoC and NAND are intact.
When files matter more than a working laptop, see MacBook data recovery. Recovery is quoted separately. For repair scope, see MacBook logic board repair.
Faults we diagnose before quoting a full board
These are the board-level presentations we see most often in Chennai. None of them is automatically a new logic board. Diagnosis decides.
- No power or no boot. USB-C Power Delivery never leaves 5 V, MagSafe 3 (on 2021 Pro and 2022 Air onward) never indicates charge, fans never move, or the machine shuts down as soon as a charger is connected.
- Unstable power under load. The main power bus (PPBUS on many T2 schematics, a corresponding always-on rail on Apple Silicon) collapses when the display, trackpad, or storage comes up. Causes include a shorted MOSFET, a failed charger IC (ISL-class on many T2 boards), or a damaged USB-C power-delivery controller.
- Liquid (rain, AC condensate, coffee, bag spill). Corrosion under shields at the charging edge, keyboard connectors, or around the SoC heat spreader. Do not keep applying power. See logic board repair after rain and liquid damage repair.
- USB-C or MagSafe port damage. Bent connectors, damaged cables, and underspecified adapters take out the port and the controller behind it. On many T2 and early M-series boards that controller is a CD3215 or CD3217. Replacing the port alone, without testing the IC, is a common reason a machine returns still dead.
- Progress bar, Apple logo loop, kernel panic, or missing disk. This can be NAND, the storage path, or a rail that falls over under load. We check whether storage still responds before anyone discusses erase and reinstall.
- Firmware revive or restore will not complete. DFU loops, a spinning globe that never finishes, or Secure Boot errors. Apple Configurator needs a board that can already take 5 V and hold a USB data session. A dark board is a power-rail job first.
For M1 Air no-power specifically: MacBook Air M1 no power.
Safe checks before you visit
These steps do not require opening the MacBook. Note what you observe. Stop if a connector sparks, smells of hot electronics, or becomes too hot to touch.
- If it was wet, stop. Unplug the charger and the computer. Do not hold the power button to reset a damp board. Do not use rice, an oven, or a hair dryer. Heat can drive residue under shields and BGA packages.
- Use a known-good adapter at the wattage Apple specifies for the model. Any USB-C Power Delivery adapter can charge, including a 20 W iPhone brick, but a Pro under load may still lose battery on an undersized adapter. That is not proof the board is dead. Try a second cable. Charge cables fail independently of the board.
- Test every charge port once. On two-port Air and 13-inch Pro models, one USB-C controller can fail while the other still negotiates. On 14-inch and 16-inch Pro models, test both sides. On MagSafe 3 machines, test MagSafe and at least one USB-C port. If only one path takes 20 V, say so at drop-off.
- Use the correct power procedure for the chip. Apple Silicon: shut down (hold the power / Touch ID button up to 10 seconds if it will not shut down), then press and hold power until you see “Loading startup options.” If the screen stays black, stop. Intel T2: Apple’s SMC reset is left Control, left Option, and right Shift for 7 seconds, then continue holding those keys plus the power button for another 7 seconds, release, wait, then press power. An SMC reset will not clear a shorted rail or dry a liquid board.
- Record one sign of life. Do not keep reproducing it. Fan motion, trackpad click, Caps Lock LED, MagSafe LED (MagSafe 3 models only; T2 USB-C notebooks have no MagSafe), USB activity on another computer, or warmth at one corner. Repeated power cycles on a shorted rail can turn a recoverable IC fault into a larger repair.
- Optional USB check, only if the Mac is dry. Use a data-capable USB-C cable into another Mac. Apple Configurator or System Information may show a DFU or USB device. Finder often shows nothing in DFU. No USB life means power or controller, not another Recovery attempt.
- If fans run but the lid is dark, test an external display once. Image on an external monitor, or a faint desktop when a torch is held to the panel, points to a display or backlight path, not a dead GPU. No image and no USB life stays on the logic-board path.
- Do not open the bottom case at home. Battery connectors sit next to data lines. A slipped tool can damage the NAND area on Apple Silicon Air boards. Teardown belongs on an ESD-safe bench.
If these steps restore a normal boot, still have the machine inspected after liquid, a loose port, or charging on only one connector. Intermittent 5 V / 20 V negotiation is often a controller beginning to fail.
Apple’s typical adapter wattage (for comparison, not a quote)
Figures below follow Apple’s published adapter guidance. A lower-wattage USB-C PD adapter may still charge slowly. It is not a substitute for diagnosis.
| Family | Typical Apple adapter |
|---|---|
| MacBook Air 2018-2020 (T2) and 13-inch M1 | 30 W |
| MacBook Air 13-inch 2022 and later | 30 W or 35 W Dual USB-C (67 W / 70 W also supported) |
| MacBook Air 15-inch | 35 W Dual USB-C |
| MacBook Pro 13-inch 2018-2020 (T2) | 61 W |
| MacBook Pro 13-inch M1 / M2 | 61 W or 67 W |
| MacBook Pro 15-inch 2018-2019 (T2) | 87 W |
| MacBook Pro 16-inch 2019 (T2) | 96 W |
| MacBook Pro 14-inch 2021 and later | 67 W, 70 W, or 96 W depending on chip |
| MacBook Pro 16-inch 2021 and later | 140 W |
How we read the symptom on the bench
| What you see | What we measure first | Typical path after you approve |
|---|---|---|
| Dark, no USB life, adapter stays cool | Input path, USB-C / MagSafe controller, first 5 V rail | Port and power-delivery IC, or short isolation on the input path |
| Stays at 5 V, never negotiates 20 V, battery never reports | USB-C Power Delivery handshake and charger IC | Controller or charger-IC replacement when that is the fault, not a new board |
| Starts, then dies when display, trackpad, or storage loads | Main power bus under load, PMIC, CPU / SoC power stages | Short isolation, then PMIC or MOSFET work |
| Folder with question mark, or disk missing in Recovery | Whether NAND still responds; T2 or Secure Enclave still paired | Storage-path repair or billed data recovery. We do not erase first. |
| DFU revive or restore fails | USB data lines, firmware power, liquid around the SoC | Revive only after the board can hold a stable DFU session |
| Failed after rain, coffee, or a wet bag | Corrosion under shields, port wells, keyboard connectors | Ultrasonic clean and retest, then IC work only if a short remains |
T2 Intel notebooks
T2 Air and Pro models still support an SMC reset and Intel Recovery key combinations, including Option-Command-R for Internet Recovery, but those shortcuts require the machine to already show a screen. They do not apply to a dark board.
- Worth trying if the Mac still shows video: the SMC sequence above; Internet Recovery; a known-good 30 W (Air), 61 W (13-inch Pro), 87 W (15-inch), or 96 W (16-inch 2019) adapter; both USB-C ports.
- Not useful on a dark T2 Mac: NVRAM / PRAM reset (Option-Command-P-R needs a board that already starts), a USB macOS installer, or buying a donor board before diagnosis. A donor T2 board will not decrypt the original SSD.
- DFU revive with Apple Configurator is a workshop procedure. We use it when the board already enumerates over USB. We do not use it as a first step on a wet or shorted board. A firmware restore will not lift a short on the main power bus.
Jobs we commonly quote after measurement include USB-C port and CD3215/CD3217 work, charger-IC replacement, input FET shorts, liquid around the T2 / audio / SSD region, and PMIC repair when the main bus is down. Turnaround is typically 1-3 days after parts are confirmed.
M-series notebooks
Apple Silicon has no SMC reset. Left Control-Option-Shift does nothing useful. Command-R at power-on is an Intel shortcut. The documented user procedure is: Mac off, then hold the power button until startup options appear. If that screen never appears, the job is beyond self-service.
- Worth trying: a USB-C PD or MagSafe 3 adapter in the correct wattage class; every charge port once; one startup-options hold; one USB check against another Mac if the machine is dry.
- Not useful: SMC or NVRAM key combos copied from Intel guides, third-party “SMC reset” utilities, leaving a 16-inch Pro overnight on a 20 W phone adapter as a repair, heat treatment, or a DFU attempt when the host Mac never sees a device.
- Data: Files are bound to the SoC on that board. A donor board is not a data-safe fix. If NAND still responds after we restore power, we quote micro-soldering on the original board. If NAND or the SoC has failed, we say so before you approve labour you do not need.
What free diagnosis includes
Diagnosis at iQube Tech Care is free. There is no bench fee to identify the fault. You receive the findings and a quote. If you decline, the MacBook goes back unrepaired.
- Visual inspection of ports, liquid, corrosion, and previous repair work.
- USB-C / MagSafe input checks so a dead adapter or a single dead port is not quoted as a dead SoC.
- Power-rail and short tracing on the main bus and supporting 3.3 V / 5 V supplies, including PMIC behaviour under light load.
- Whether storage still responds. That decides if a data-intact repair is possible, and whether billed recovery is even available.
- A written quote: cleaning only, a defined IC or port, a more complex multi-rail job, or a clear statement if the board cannot be saved.
We explain the fault in plain language and, where it helps, show what we found. Repair does not start until you approve the quote. If the scope changes, we stop and request a new approval. No unapproved add-on labour.
Component-level work we carry out
The Mount Road bench is set up for chip-level MacBook work: the jobs that cannot be solved by swapping a battery, keyboard, or display.
- Micro-soldering of charging ICs, PMICs, MOSFET power stages, and USB-C power-delivery controllers.
- Short-circuit isolation so the failed device is replaced, not a spread of nearby chips.
- Ultrasonic cleaning and corrosion removal under shields after liquid, then a full retest before any solder.
- T2 and Apple Silicon DFU revive or restore only after the board can hold a stable USB session.
- Data-first sequence: restore enough power to ask whether storage is alive, then quote recovery separately if you need files off a machine you may not repair.

Keeping data on the original board
On T2 and M-series MacBooks, data stays intact when the original board is repaired and the Secure Enclave plus NAND remain healthy. We do not erase, reinstall, or run Disk Utility First Aid as the first step on a no-power machine. If FileVault is enabled, you will still need the login password or recovery key after power is restored.
- No OS install or erase without your approval.
- If you need files more than a working laptop, recovery is a separate billed quote. Free diagnosis still tells you whether the disk responds.
- A replacement logic board is quoted only when the original SoC, NAND, or board is not technically or economically recoverable. The quote states the data consequence.
If the Mac still boots, take a Time Machine or cloud backup before drop-off. If it does not boot, do not keep powering it in the hope that macOS will mount. Repeated attempts on a weak rail can finish a disk that was still readable.
Fees, approval, and warranty
Diagnosis is free. We do not charge to inspect, measure, and explain.
No work without approval. The quote lists the fault, the intended repair, the parts class, and when warranty starts. You approve, or you take the machine home.
No fix, no fee. If we cannot complete the repair described in your approved quote, you are not charged for that repair. Diagnosis remains free either way. Data recovery, if you approve it, is billed as its own job.
90-day warranty on completed logic board repairs. Warranty starts at handover of the finished, approved job, not at the free check-in. It covers the work performed. The quote states what that includes on your model.
Price depends on the fault. Replacing a USB-C controller is not the same labour as a PMIC under a heat spreader. We quote after measurement rather than advertising a single board-repair figure that cannot cover both jobs.
Drop-off in Chennai
Work is carried out at Mount Road. Customers typically reach us from Nungambakkam in about 10-15 minutes, and from Anna Nagar in about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. We also see machines from Chetpet, Kodambakkam, T. Nagar, Adyar, Velachery, Porur, and OMR. WhatsApp the model identifier (on the underside, or from About This Mac if it still boots) and a photo of the ports if you want a parts check before you travel.
Diagnosis is often same-day. Micro-soldering is usually 1-3 days after parts are confirmed. Liquid jobs can take longer because we clean, dry, and retest before committing to ICs. The quote includes the timeline.
FAQ
Can you repair M1, M2, M3, and M4 MacBook logic boards in Chennai?
Yes. Many no-power, charging, USB-C, MagSafe, and liquid faults on Apple Silicon are chip-level jobs. Some SoC or NAND failures cannot be repaired. Free diagnosis establishes which case you have before you approve labour.
Can you repair a T2 MacBook without losing data?
When we repair the original board and the T2 plus SSD remain healthy, the disk can decrypt after power is restored. You still need your login password if FileVault is on. A full board replacement does not keep that T2/SSD pair. We quote component-level work first when it is viable.
Do you charge for diagnosis?
No. Diagnosis is free. You pay only if you approve a repair, or a separate billed data-recovery job. If you decline, the MacBook leaves unrepaired at no charge.
What does no fix, no fee mean?
If we cannot complete the repair described in your approved quote, you are not charged for that repair. Diagnosis is free either way.
Is there a warranty on logic board repair?
Completed board repairs include a 90-day warranty on the work performed. Coverage for your IC and model is stated on the quote.
Should I try DFU restore before I come in?
Only if another Mac already sees the notebook in DFU and the machine was not exposed to liquid. A dark T2 or M-series Mac with no USB life needs rail diagnosis. A restore will not repair a short.
